Can I get an exemption so I can register for fewer than 13 credits? The
University will continue to welcome degree-seeking students whose life
situations clearly do not allow them to be full-time students. These
students can petition for a reduced credit load and work on their
degrees at a pace suited to their life situations. Below is a list of
situations for which students may seek exemptions: - Graduating seniors
May only need to take 10 or 12 credits a term in their senior year to
graduate. These students should file a graduation plan with their
college by the end of their junior year or no earlier than the first
semester of their senior year. If the graduation plan is approved,
these students will be approved automatically for a reduced credit load.
- International students on a J-1 or F-1 visa
Need to meet specific credit requirements that differ from U.S. student
requirements. International students who need to request a reduced
credit load should complete the web-based Request for Reduced Credit
Load form, and if they are registering for fewer than 12 credits, go to
the office of International Student and Scholar Services, 190 Humphrey
Center, to complete an additional petition. This is necessary to avoid
difficulties with the US Citizenship and Immigration Services.
- Students who have a disability
If
Disability Services has determined that a reduced credit load is an
appropriate accommodation, the petition will be approved automatically
for a reduced credit load.
- Students with an illness, incapacity, or hardship of short-term duration
May
file a request for a temporary reduced credit load through their
college. Appropriate medical documentation will be necessary.
- Students seeking to pursue a unique academic opportunity
If the opportunity precludes full-time status, students may also seek a temporary reduced credit load through their college.
- Students with full-time work or family responsibilities
Students who have work or family situations that require a reduced credit load may file a petition.
Petitions
for a reduced credit load are considered on a case by case basis with
each student?s unique circumstances being taken into account; however,
the following circumstances are generally not considered sufficient reasons for taking a reduced credit load: - desire to avoid having to borrow funds
- not
being able to get into a desired or required class (Students who are
having problems getting into classes should first contact the
department of instruction to see if additional sections may be offered.
They should also work with their college adviser. The college will do
everything possible to identify space or find alternative offerings
that enable students to stay on track for graduation. Students should
also remember that for some requirements there are a variety of choices
that will meet that need.)
- desire to take a reduced credit load to maintain a high grade point average
- desire to participate heavily in campus organizations
