Motivation for Community Service Involvement

by Megan Seltz
Transfer Adviser

Hey students! Are you currently involved in community service or do ever think about it? While it may have been easier to be involved in high-school when you seemingly had more time and easier access, you can find ways to help out as a college student.

As students, you are typically at point in your lives where you are constructing a view of yourself and meaning of service for the great good of society. While external benefits such as volunteering to be competitive on scholarship or admissions applications may have be motivating in the short-term, the real reward comes from the personal growth associated with dedicating your time to serve others. Internal influences such as developing a greater focus on others and a sense of civic responsibility facilitate a long-term commitment to community service. Students who stick with service often have an evolving understanding of service and take pride in social change, activism, and responsibly for community and social justice. Does this sound like you?
