Will You Succeed in College? by Emily McCreight Academic Adviser, Social Sciences Student Community Ever wondered if there are some ways to figure out if you'll succeed in college? A study done by DeBerard, Spielmans, and Julka (2004) might help. DeBerard et al. studied college freshman and factors that could potentially affect their college GPA and attrition rates. They looked at ten factors (high school GPA, SAT scores, physical health, mental health, support structure, escape-avoidance coping, accepting-responsibility coping, smoking, drinking, and gender) to find out which factors most influenced college GPA and student retention. They found that students who have higher high school GPAs and SAT scores, more social support and better mental health are more likely to have a higher college GPA. Conversely, if students participate in activities like smoking, drinking, negative coping mechanisms (escape-avoidance coping and accepting-responsibility coping) they are more likely to have a lower college GPA. The only factor that was found to affect retention was high school GPA (students with higher high school GPAs are more likely to stay in college). If you see any of these risk factors in your friends, try to confront them or at least email them a link to this article so they have a chance to correct whatever problem they have before it's too late
