The Carlson School of Management (CSOM) offers 12 majors leading to the Bachelor of Science in Business (B.S.B.):

Accounting

Finance
General Management Self-Designed
Human Resources and Industrial Relations

Admission to CSOM is competitive. Although all applicants with a 3.0 minimum overall GPA are considered, the average GPA of admits has recently ranged from 3.4-3.7. The average GPA of admits changes slightly each fall, depending on the strength of the applicant pool and number of spaces available. In addition to your overall GPA, your GPA in the management prerequisite ("tool") courses, your essays and activities/experiences are important components of your application.

Please refer to the CSOM web site at http://www.carlsonschool.umn.edu/ for general undergraduate information.

Because CSOM is competitive, many excellent students are not admitted. Therefore, it is crucial that all pre-business students have a back-up plan in case they are not admitted. There are many options available here at the University of Minnesota, including other business-related majors, completing a liberal arts degree with a business minor, and designing your own major with a management "area of concentration." To learn more about these options we encourage you to attend an information session. Business Careers for CLA Majors is offered every semester.

If you plan to apply to CSOM, or you are interested in discussing the many business-related options available to you, please schedule an appointment with your CLA adviser to discuss course planning and options. Links to the CLA student community websites can be found here.

How do I prepare for CSOM?

  1. Start your math as soon as possible. If you have not done so already, take a math placement test on the web to get a recommendation of which course you should begin with.  Contact your CLA advising office to interpret your scores, to assure you start in a course you are adequately prepared for.

  2. Begin taking the prerequisite "tool" courses as soon as possible. For sophomore admission you must have completed Econ 1101, Econ 1102, and calculus (Math 1271 or Math 1142) by the fall term of admission. However, strong preference is given to students who have these courses completed by the spring term before the fall term of admission.

For junior admission you must have completed Econ 1102, Econ 1102, Math 1271 or Math 1142, OMS 2550 (or equivalent), and Acct 2050 by the fall term of admission. However, strong preference is given to students who have these courses completed by the spring term before the fall term of admission.

  3. Schedule an appointment with your CLA adviser to review the CSOM planning sheet, discuss your math placement, discuss your application to CSOM, and to discuss course planning and your "plan B" options. Links to the CLA student community websites can be found here. You may also access the planning sheet and application through the CSOM web site at http://www.carlsonschool.umn.edu/.

  4. Get involved in a student organization or volunteer opportunity that is interesting to you. Relevant experiences outside the classroom can build leadership and interpersonal skills, and strengthen your application. The Campus Involvement Center lists all the student organizations on campus at http://studentgroups.tc.umn.edu/. The Career & Community Learning Center located in 135 Johnston Hall posts internships and volunteer opportunities on the CLA Link: http://careerservices.class.umn.edu/students/
