8. How do I produce a resume and interview for a job?

Having a strong resume and quality interviewing skills are very important when seeking to enter any career field. Students often over-estimate their abilities in these areas and therefore do not present themselves strongly to employers. For a student interested in a business career for a large corporation, the competition could be especially tight making it extremely important to have an outstanding resume and strong interviewing skills.

Resumes
There are a lot of resources available to CLA students to assist them in writing an effective resume:
  • Students are strongly encourages to attend a Resume and Cover Letter Workshop to thoroughly learn the components of a great resume and to begin putting one together.
  • 135 Johnston Hall has many books/brochures with suggestions and examples to follow.
  • Visit the CCLC Website for some basic tips for putting together a resume.
  • Stop by 135 Johnston Hall to receive a critique of a resume you have already written.
Interviews
Students who have never gone through a formal interview process are sometime unaware of all the things that factor into an interview: researching an employer, first impressions, clothing choice, tone of voice, quality of examples given to answers, follow up, etc. Because having a strong interview requires you to consider so many things, it is important to think about interviewing long before you begin you first one. Some resources that can help you prepare for your first interview include:
  • Students are strongly encouraged to attend an Effective Interviewing Workshop to thoroughly learn how to prepare for and ace a job interview.
  • 135 Johnston Hall has many books/brochures with suggestions for a successful interviewing.
  • Schedule a videotaped mock interview with one of the Career and Community Learning Center?s professional staff members by calling 612-624-7577.
