You're about ready to
decide…
Once you have assessed your skills, interests, and
values—and once you have explored potential majors—you should be
prepared to
begin the decision-making process! While
exploring yourself and potential majors, you already have been
exercising your
decision-making skills, and likely have discovered how and why certain
majors
appeal to you. Obviously you are going to
want to choose a major that has interesting classes, engaging
instructors, and
opportunities for you to work with peers who inspire you. Your
potential major also should allow you to use the talents and abilities
that you already possess, and to develop new skills that you and
potential employers will value.
If you are
like most students, however, you probably are left with several majors that
seem appealing.
The following pages will provide some suggestions for
narrowing down your list of potential majors, or for deciding between a couple
or among a few remaining majors:
- Is my
potential major really the best match with my skills and my interests?
- How
does my potential major connect to potential careers?
- What
special services do I want my department to provide?
