The fall CLA Commencement Ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday, December 13, in Northrop Memorial Auditorium.

Upcoming Events

Student Speaker applications are due November 2. Click here for more information.

General Information

You will be invited to participate in the ceremony and your name will appear in the commencement booklet if you have applied to graduate summer 2009 or fall 2009. Others who wish to participate should email: commence@umn.edu or call the Student Information Office at (612) 625-2020 to be placed on a waiting list; you will be notified by email after Monday, November 9, if there is space available for you to participate.

RSVP and Guest Information

If you have applied to graduate summer 2009 or fall 2009, you may RSVP online once you receive your invitation. Invitations will be sent via email during the week of October 5. You must RSVP by November 6 if you wish to participate in the fall ceremony.

Graduates are asked to limit their guests to 6 (six). Please note that all seating is general admission, first come first served, and specific seats and/or consecutive seats are not guaranteed.

Graduate Assembly Information

Please meet in on the 3rd floor of Northrop one hour before the start of the ceremony. The procession into the auditorium will begin 30 minutes before the start of the ceremony.  Please leave coats and valuables with your guests as there will not be a secure place for you to leave them.

Each ceremony is expected to last approximately two and a half hours and includes a procession of faculty, students, regents, and other guests. There will be a commencement address and presentation of degree candidates. All degree candidates cross the stage as their names are called.

Photos and DVDs

A commercial photographer will take your picture as you cross the stage. A proof will be emailed to you or sent to your home address; you are not obligated to purchase photographs. If you would like to preregister your email address with the photographer, you may do so here. The ceremony will also be professionally recorded, and DVDs may be purchased for $24.95.  DVD order forms will be available at the ceremony or online.

Cap and tassle

Caps and Gowns

Caps and gowns, along with many other commencement items, can be purchased at the University Bookstore in Coffman Memorial Union, or online.

Caps and gowns are not required to participate in the ceremony; however, 99% of students choose to wear academic regalia. Business professional attire is suggested for underneath your academic robe.

Faculty Invites

Each year, the Commencement Committee invites faculty members from the College of Liberal Arts to participate in commencement by being part of the faculty procession. In an effort to involve CLA students in the faculty invitation process, the Commencement Committee invites you to submit the names of faculty who have had an impact on you during your time at the University. It may be a professor that you had for a class, a faculty member in your major department who served as your mentor, or someone who helped to make your experience at the University a positive one.

You will have the opportunity to submit the names of faculty members you would like to extend invitations to when you RSVP for you and your guests on the commencement RSVP website.
