Due to the large number of graduates who participate in spring commencement, the College of Liberal Arts holds two ceremonies. This spring's ceremonies will take place at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 18, in Northrop Memorial Auditorium. To learn which ceremony you will be invited to attend, click here. Additional information about the spring commencement ceremonies is below for your reference.
You will be invited to participate in the ceremony and your name will appear in the commencement booklet if you have applied to graduate spring 2008 or May term 2008. Others who wish to participate should email: commencement@class.cla.umn.edu or call the Student Information Office at (612) 625-2020 to be placed on a waiting list; you will be notified by email after Monday, April 21, if there is space available for you to participate.
If you have applied to graduate spring 2008 or May term 2008, you may RSVP online at www.mycla.umn.edu once you receive your invitation. Invitations will be sent via e-mail during the week of March 10. You must RSVP by Friday, April 18 if you wish to participate in the spring ceremony.
Tickets are required for guests' entrance to the ceremony. Graduates do not need tickets for themselves. Up to five (5) guests per graduate will be allowed. Graduates will be able to reserve seats for their guests when they RSVP to attend.
Please note that all seating is general admission and tickets do not reserve a specific seat or guarantee consecutive seats.
Overflow seating and live video of the commencement ceremonies will be available in the Great Hall of Coffman Memorial Union for guests without tickets.
Please meet in front of Coffman Memorial Union on the plaza one hour before the start of the ceremony. The procession into the auditorium will begin 30 minutes before the start of the ceremony. Please leave coats and valuables with your guests as there will not be a secure place for you to leave them.
Each ceremony is expected to last approximately two and a half hours and includes a procession of faculty, students, regents, and other guests. There will be a commencement address and presentation of degree candidates. All degree candidates cross the stage as their names are called.
A commercial photographer will take your picture as you cross the stage. A proof will be sent to your home address; you are not obligated to purchase photographs. The ceremony will also be professionally recorded and DVDs may be purchased for $19.95. Order forms will be available at the ceremony or by calling (612) 625-2020.
Caps and gowns, along with many other commencement items, can be purchased at GradFest, the University Bookstore in Coffman Memorial Union, or online at www.bookstores.umn.edu/grad/.
Caps and gowns are not required to participate in the ceremony; however, 99% of students choose to wear academic regalia. Business professional attire is suggested for underneath your academic robe.
Each year, the Commencement Committee invites faculty members from the College of Liberal Arts to participate in commencement by being part of the faculty procession. In an effort to involve CLA students in the faculty invitation process, the Commencement Committee invites you to submit the names of faculty who have had an impact on you during your time at the University. It may be a professor that you had for a class, a faculty member in your major department who served as your mentor, or someone who helped to make your experience at the University a positive one.
You will have the opportunity to submit the names of faculty members you would like to extend invitations to when you RSVP for you and your guests on the commencement RSVP website.
