Are there any course requirements that you need to meet?

If you still need to officially declare a major, does your major-of-choice have any prerequisites?

If so, the sooner that you meet these prerequisites, the sooner you can officially declare the major. Remember that the University requires that you declare a major by the time you reach 60 credits. If you have not declared a major by the time you reach 60 credits, you will have a hold put on your record that will prevent you from registering. You may end up delaying your registration or declaring a major that is not your first choice. Take the prerequisite courses as soon as you know what major you intend to declare. Officially declaring your major means that you have completed a Major Program form and have filed a copy with your major department and your CLA student community.

Are you getting close to graduation?

Do you know what requirements you still need to meet in order to graduate? It is important that you make an appointment with your CLA academic adviser to go over your senior balance sheet. In this appointment, your adviser will review your balance sheet and let you know what you still need to take to meet the requirements for your major, for the College of Liberal Arts, and for the University in order to graduate. Don't neglect this appointment! Sometimes students have to delay graduation because of an overlooked requirement.

Are you taking a course that is part of a sequence?
If so, complete the sequence in order and do not let a term lapse between courses. Language and math courses in particular build on the skills and concepts introduced in previous courses. If you let a term go by without taking the next course in the sequence, you may forget what you've learned and end up with a lower grade than you would have earned had you remained in the sequence. If you received a poor grade in a course that is part of a sequence, talk to your CLA academic adviser, who can discuss your options. It may not be wise to proceed with a sequence if you had a difficult time with an earlier course.
