How-To Guide: Change Grading Options

This website will guide you through the basic steps for changing the grading option for one or more of your courses. Your circumstances may not be reflected in the guides offered here. Making changes to your registration may have an impact on your financial aid award and your progress toward a degree. If you have any questions about how changing your registration may affect you, contact your CLA student community. Every time you register or change your registration, print out an enrollment statement to verify your registration and keep a copy of it.

What are the grading options?

Students at the University of Minnesota may choose to be graded by one of two systems, with some exceptions. On the A-F grading system students receive a grade of A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, or F. (There is no D-.) These grades contribute toward a student's grade point average. On the S-N grading system students receive a grade of S (satisfactory) or N (no grade). Instructors determine the level of work required to earn an S. S's and N's do not count toward a student's grade point average.

I'd like to change my grade base from A-F to S-N or from S-N to A-F.
