Writing Your Personal Statement

Often, one of the most intimidating steps in applying to graduate/professional programs is composing your personal statement. A quality personal statement that gives the admissions committee a better sense of you as an applicant is an important part of your application. It should be written in a way that helps you stand out from other applicants. Plan to spend a lot of time on this part of your application and also plan to do several drafts! Last, it is critical that you get feedback from other people while you are writing this portion of your application.

Helpful Resources
  • "Guidelines for Creating Effective Personal Statements," available in the Career and Community Learning Center resource room, 135 Johnston Hall.
  • Books:
    • Graduate Admissions Essays-What Works, What Doesn't, and Why
    • Medical School Admissions (5th ed.), which gives examples of other students' medical school admissions essays.
    • How to Get Into the Right Law School and How to Get Into the Right Medical School, which include chapters on composing a personal statement.
Personal Statement Review

CLA students can have their personal statements reviewed by a career counselor. To set up such an appointment, visit the Career and Community Learning Center in 135 Johnston Hall and speak with a peer adviser. Appointments are typically scheduled after students have reviewed the materials listed above and incorporated these recommendations into their essay.
